The Wilds

In the city directories 1940 · 16 people at eight addresses

The directories print 16 people named Wild at eight addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Wilds at 3957 Alice in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 16: a salesman (3), an assistant accountant, an electrician, an employee, a laborer and a laundress, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Riley Park (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E A Wild at 3957 Alice Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Elizabeth A Wild there as the householder, widow of G H, with Cath A Wild, Elizabeth C Wild, and Kate Wild, a laundress at Sterling Laundry. In 1940 the directory lists Miss M G Wild at 1324 Arbutus Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mabel G Wild there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone.

In 1940 the directory lists T Wild at 843 Cardero Street. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Wild there as the householder, a meat cutter at A & C London Market, with T Lawrence Wild, a clerk at Swifts, and Reginald R Wild, an assistant accountant at the Royal Bank. In 1940 the directory lists D Wild at 74 East 38th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Don Wild there as the householder, an electrician, with Thomas Wild, a springmaker at Simmons.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs N Wild at 334 East 41st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Nellie Wild there as the householder, widow of J, with Cecil H Wild, a laborer. In 1940 the directory lists W Wild at 49 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Walter Wild there as the householder, a salesman.

In 1940 the directory lists E Wild at 4506 West 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Wild there as the householder, a salesman at C C Cross & Co, with Beverly R Wild, a salesman at Safeway. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs F W Wild at 1201 West Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Florence W Wild there as the householder.

Today

843 Cardero, 4506 West 6th and 1201 West Georgia still have their buildings from before 1946, 1201 West Georgia on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1324 Arbutus (2021), 74 East 38th (1970) and 334 East 41st (1998) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 3957 Alice and 49 East Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
