Mount Pleasant

3,801 addresses on 50 streets, in the 1940 city directory

Conductors were three times as common in Mount Pleasant as on the rest of the site's streets, 86 of them in 1940. Among them was William H Sinclair of 2510 Alberta Street. The 1940 city directory lists 8,295 people in Mount Pleasant, most often as salesmen, laborers and stenographers.

Who lived at each house is read on every street in 1940; and in 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935 and 1945 on four of its 371 blocks: the 2400–2700 blocks of Quebec Street.

At home

1,482 of the 4,196 households the 1940 street section lists here carry its * (the directory's mark for a family member owning the house), against half on the rest of the site's streets. *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark, printed from 1935).

Half of the people its name section lists here are householders (h); the rest live in someone else's house (r), as family, boarders or roomers. On the rest of the site's streets, half are householders.

What the directory left out

The 1940 directory printed “Orientals” at seven doors in Mount Pleasant instead of the residents' names. Its canvassers often didn't take down Chinese, Japanese and other residents' names, so the people at those doors can't be named or counted from it. Each door is on its street's page, as printed.
