What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: an advertising manager, a barber, a game warden, a laborer, a manager and a nurse, among others. Two of them worked for Office Specialty Manufacturing. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists D G McMartin at 1237 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists David G McMartin there as the householder, a storekeeper at the CPR. The 1940 name section lists Maude McMartin at 4693 Drummond Drive, widow of W J.

P McMartin is listed at 336 East 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Peter McMartin there as the householder, a barber at Tram Barber Shop, with Lloyd D McMartin, a platformman at Garvin Ice & Fuel. R W McMartin is listed at 1045 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Roy W MacMartin there as the householder, a game warden at the BC Government.

The 1940 name section lists Arthur K McMartin at 1246 Haro Street, an advertising manager at the Commercial Service Corporation, with Ruth McMartin. In 1940 the directory lists H J McMartin at 549 Victoria Drive. The 1940 name section lists Hugh J McMartin there as the householder, a laborer.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs G McMartin at 2385 West 45th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Gertrude McMartin there as the householder, widow of E D, with Margaret J McMartin, a stenographer at Office Specialty Manufacturing. In 1940 the directory lists J D McMartin at 2465 West 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James D McMartin there as the householder, a manager at Office Specialty Manufacturing, with Norah J McMartin, and Pauline K McMartin, a nurse at Metro Health Vancouver City.

Today

4693 Drummond Drive and 2465 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1237 Burrard (1999), 336 East 7th (1966), 1045 Haro (1980), 1246 Haro (1961) and 2385 West 45th (1991) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 549 Victoria Drive, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
