Their neighbourhoods

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G D Levy at 2328 Balaclava Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists George D Levy there as the householder, a buyer at BC Drugs. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs F Levy at 843 Cardero Street. The 1940 name section lists Frances Levy there as the householder, widow of C H N, with F Irene Levy, a stenographer at the Workmen's Compensation Board.

In 1940 the directory lists E Levy at 845 Davie Street. The 1940 name section lists Emanuel Levy there as the householder, a tailor at Bond Clothes Shop, with Rosetta Levy, widow of P. In 1940 the directory lists M V Levy at 65 East 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Manuel V Levy there as the householder, a manager at Hux Lunch.

The 1940 name section lists Harry Levy at 575 East Hastings Street. F Levy is listed at 837 Gore Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Levy there as the householder.

M A Levy is listed at 1877 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mortimer A Levy there as the householder, proprietor of OK Imperial. H Levy, in graphic art supplies, is listed at 576 Seymour Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas E W Levy at 3819 West 26th Avenue, a sanderman at BC Hardwood Floor.

T E Levy is listed at 2041 West 48th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas E Levy there as the householder, a school teacher. H Levy is listed at 102 West 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. Today

2328 Balaclava, 843 Cardero, 1877 Haro, 576 Seymour and 3819 West 26th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2328 Balaclava on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2041 West 48th (1992) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 845 Davie, 65 East 5th, 575 East Hastings, 837 Gore and 102 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
