What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: an accountant, an assistant manager, an iron worker, a stenographer and a teacher. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M A Foote at 2812 Alberta Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary A Foote there as the householder, widow of H J, with Dorothy O Foote, a stenographer at Marwell Construction. In 1940 the directory lists R W Foote at 1820 Bayswater Street. The 1940 name section lists Roy W Foote there as the householder, an assistant manager at Powell River Sales.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Leila F Foote at 761 Cardero Street, a teacher at the Academy of Useful Arts. E C Foote is listed at 4867 James Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edgar C Foote there as the householder, an iron worker. The 1940 name section lists Sigrun Foote at 7362 Main Street, widow of J.

In 1940 the directory lists W A Foote at 1546 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William A Foote there as the householder, of Santa Monica Apartments. In 1940 the directory lists W A Foote at 3256 West 3rd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists W Albert Foote there as the householder, retired, with Helen K Foote, an accountant at the Sun.

Today

2812 Alberta, 4867 James and 1546 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1820 Bayswater (1977) and 761 Cardero (1975) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 7362 Main and 3256 West 3rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree.
