Where the Wiltons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a proprietor (2), a barber, a driver, an employee, an operator and a sub foreman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F R Wilton at 5649 Balaclava Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frank R Wilton there as the householder, a driver at the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Wilton at 1611 East 6th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary Wilton there as the householder, with Doris Wilton, an operator for Gordon Campbell.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Wilton at 1236 East 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ada Wilton there, with Geoffrey C Wilton, who worked for Restmore. In 1940 the directory lists I A Wilton at 2272 West 41st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ivan A Wilton there as the householder, a barber at Mayfair Hairdressing, with Mrs Eleanor E Wilton, proprietor of Mayfair Hairdressing.

The 1940 name section lists George W Wilton at 1876 West 4th Avenue, retired. B A Wilton is listed at 2770 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists B Arthur Wilton there as the householder, proprietor of Broadway Shoe Renu. The 1940 name section lists Charles A Wilton at 2730 Woodland Drive, a sub foreman at the BC Electric Railway.

Today

2730 Woodland Drive still has its building from before 1946, dated 1911 by the City's record; 5649 Balaclava (1988) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1611 East 6th, 1236 East 8th, 2272 West 41st, 1876 West 4th and 2770 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
