Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Three addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: an examiner, a janitor, a lumberman, a proprietor and a serviceman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kerrisdale (2), Mount Pleasant (2), West End (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Bonnie J Willett at 6287 Adera Street, widow of J D. J C Willett, a trucking, is listed at 447 East 6th Avenue in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists W J Willett at 7105 Elliott Street. The 1940 name section lists Walter J Willett there as the householder, a janitor at Pacific Meat.

The 1940 name section lists Reginald H Willett at 1973 Haro Street, retired. B Willett is listed at 5888 Marguerite Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Benjamin Willett there as the householder, a lumberman.

H T Willett is listed at 1447 Thurlow Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harry T Willett there as the householder, proprietor of the Re-Nu Wind Shade Co of BC. The 1940 name section lists John H Willett at 2424 West 13th Avenue, an examiner at the Customs. The 1940 name section lists A Linden Willett at 123 West 14th Avenue.

H M Willett is listed at 3550 West 32nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harold M Willett there as the householder, a serviceman.

Today

6287 Adera (2018), 447 East 6th (1968), 7105 Elliott (1999), 5888 Marguerite (2012), 123 West 14th (2015) and 3550 West 32nd (1977) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1973 Haro, 1447 Thurlow and 2424 West 13th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
