What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 13: a salesman (2), an electrician, a laborer, a proprietor and a secretary. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Riley Park (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, South Cambie, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In May 1926 R Westcott took out the permit to build a house at 2887 Adanac Street. In 1940 the directory lists R Westacott at 2887 Adanac Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert Westacott there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M E Westcott at 777 Burrard Street. The 1940 name section lists Minnie E Westcott there as the householder, widow of W H, with L Mae Westcott, proprietor of the Academy of Useful Arts. In 1940 the directory lists L Westcott at 1160 East 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Leslie Westcott there as the householder, an electrician at the City of Vancouver.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Westacott at 2723 East 18th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Marie Westacott there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists I A Westcott at 479 East 51st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ivan A Westcott there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists George Westcott at 344 East Hastings Street, retired. Mrs A E Westcott is listed at 3 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Annie E Westcott there as the householder, widow of A G, with Percival Westcott, a laborer.

F H G Westcott is listed at 448 West 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick H G Westcott there as the householder, a salesman at Union Oil. F Westcott is listed at 705 West 26th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Westcott there as the householder, a secretary at Seaport Crown Fish, with N Olive Westcott.

Today

777 Burrard, 1160 East 18th, 344 East Hastings, 448 West 20th and 2446 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2887 Adanac (1961), 479 East 51st (1987) and 3 West 20th (2019) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2723 East 18th and 705 West 26th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
