What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the 16: a dressmaker, a first aidman, a hauling contractor and a stenographer. Three are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), West End (3), Mount Pleasant (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Hugh Waller at 1534 Comox Street. Miss E Waler is listed at 857 East 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edith Waller there as the householder, with Martha P Waller, widow of R. The 1940 name section lists Leonard Waller at 2921 Euclid Avenue, a student.

The 1940 name section lists Frederick Waller at 722 Hamilton Street. The 1940 name section lists Mary Waller at 1889 Haro Street. In 1940 the directory lists C F Waller, a hauling contractor, at 650 Kingsway. The 1940 name section lists Cecil F Waller there, a hauling contractor, with Emma Waller, a dressmaker for T B Lee.

The 1940 name section lists Waller (no first name printed) at 1146 Melville Street. Miss D M Waller is listed at 1234 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Doris M Waller there as the householder, a stenographer at the Royal Securities Corporation.

E Waller is listed at 5319 Ross Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edward Waller there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Mary J Waller at 1205 West 10th Avenue, widow of F.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs N Waller at 2125 West 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Nellie Waller there as the householder, widow of A H. The 1940 name section lists G Waller at 50 West Cordova Street, a first aidman.

Today

857 East 8th, 650 Kingsway and 50 West Cordova still have their buildings from before 1946; 5319 Ross (1992), 1205 West 10th (1958) and 2125 West 15th (2000) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1534 Comox, 2921 Euclid, 722 Hamilton, 1889 Haro, 1146 Melville and 1234 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
