What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: a baker, a boomman, a conductor, a fireman, a mushroom grower and an on active service, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Victoria-Fraserview (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Wadsworth at 210 Carrall Street, retired. N L Wadsworth is listed at 2047 East 26th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Neil L Wadsworth there as the householder, a baker at Woodward's.

G D Wadsworth, in mushrooms, is listed at 1611 East 59th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George D Wadsworth there, a mushroom grower. W O Wadsworth is listed at 1625 East 59th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William O Wadsworth there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver.

G D Wadsworth is listed at 2149 East 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George D Wadsworth there as the householder, retired, with Howard F Wadsworth, a boomman at Sitka Spruce Lumber. H Wadsworth is listed at 1252 East Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Henry Wadsworth there as the householder, a conductor at the CNR.

C J Woodsworth is listed at 1058 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles J Woodsworth there as the householder, a reporter at the Province. The 1940 name section lists Edgar F Wadsworth at 2370 West 2nd Avenue, on active service. The 1940 name section lists Belva E Woodsworth at 1870 Yew Street, a school teacher.

Today

210 Carrall and 1058 Nelson still have their buildings from before 1946, 1058 Nelson on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2047 East 26th (1989), 1611 East 59th (1961), 2149 East 6th (1965), 2370 West 2nd (1967) and 1870 Yew (1982) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1625 East 59th and 1252 East Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
