What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: a helper (2), a deckhand, a forest fire inspector, a grader, a janitor and a journalist, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Marpole (2), West End (2), Fairview, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Waddington (no first name printed) at 719 Broughton Street. M Waddington is listed at 233 East 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Morris Waddington there as the householder, a grader at the Eburne Saw Mills.

M H H Waddington is listed at 2020 Fir Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists M H H Waddington there as the householder, a journalist. The 1940 name section lists William F Waddington at 8757 Hudson Street, a deckhand.

In 1940 the directory lists A H Waddington at 725 Jervis Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur H Waddington there as the householder, a forest fire inspector at the BC Government. In 1940 the directory lists A Waddington at 8438 Osler Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alex Waddington there as the householder, a helper, with John A Waddington, a helper.

In 1940 the directory lists F Waddington at 3306 West 1st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Waddington there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists H Waddington at 81 West 40th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Waddington there as the householder, a janitor at the Pacific Building.

In 1940 the directory lists L C Waddington at 4401 West 9th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Lionel C Waddington there as the householder, a school teacher.

Today

4401 West 9th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1930 by the City's record; 8438 Osler (2005) and 81 West 40th (1990) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 719 Broughton, 233 East 11th, 2020 Fir, 8757 Hudson, 725 Jervis and 3306 West 1st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under W. Want a name removed? Tell us.
