Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise and Marpole. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Isabelle Turriff at 2719 Alder Street, an operator at Reid's Holiday Togs. L H Turriff is listed at 8049 Cartier Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Lorne H Turriff there as the householder, a salesman at Polly Ann Bakeries.

W L Turriff is listed at 787 Homer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William L Turriff there as the householder, in advertising. A Turriff is listed at 2747 Sophia Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Andrew Turriff there as the householder, a laborer, with Isabella Turriff, widow of A.

Mrs E G Turiff is listed at 2670 Triumph Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Elsie G Turriff there as the householder, widow of J G, with Leslie G Turriff, a stenographer for H F Ritchie. A H Turriff is listed at 2446 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Arthur H Turriff there as the householder, on active service.

The 1940 name section lists Kathleen V Turriff at 2910 West 5th Avenue, a maid for T Fanning. In 1940 the directory lists A Turriff at 348 West 7th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alex Turriff there as the householder, a laborer at Bissinger & Co.

Today

2910 West 5th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1914 by the City's record; 8049 Cartier (2006), 2670 Triumph (1990) and 2446 West 4th (2000) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2719 Alder, 787 Homer, 2747 Sophia and 348 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
