What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the seven: a barber, a branch manager, a driver and a trainman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Clara Tuff at 75 East 7th Avenue, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists W S Tuff at 1070 Haro Street, a trainman at the CPR. In 1940 the directory lists J A Tuff at 4128 Knight Street. The 1940 name section lists James A Tuff there as the householder, a driver at M T Co.

In 1940 the directory lists H V Tuff, a barber, at 523 Seymour Street. J L Tuff is listed at 4248 Slocan Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James L Tuff there as the householder, a branch manager at Safeway.

H V Tuff is listed at 2853 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hedley V Tuff there as the householder, a barber. J A Tuff is listed at 3325 William Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John A Tuff there as the householder, retired.

Today

4248 Slocan, 2853 West 15th and 3325 William still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 75 East 7th, 1070 Haro, 4128 Knight and 523 Seymour, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
