The Tomkinses
In the city directories 1940 · nine people at six addresses
The directories print nine people named Tomkins at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Tomkinses at 2976 West 6th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for four of the nine: a maid, a proprietor, a salesman and a stenographer.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, Marpole, Mount Pleasant and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Kathleen Tomkins at 4237 Angus Drive, a maid for G A Birks. The 1940 name section lists James D Tomkins at 8036 Cartier Street, retired. In 1940 the directory lists J Tomkins at 1948 East 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Joseph Tomkins there as the householder, retired.
In 1940 the directory lists A E Tomkins at 621 Jervis Street. The 1940 name section lists Augustus E Tomkins there as the householder, proprietor of Business Machines. In 1940 the directory lists R W Tomkins at 2976 West 6th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Rowley W Tomkins there as the householder, retired, with P E Joyce Tomkins, a stenographer at Beatty Bros, and Ralph G Tomkins.
In 1940 the directory lists E Tomkins at 102 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edgar Tomkins there as the householder, a salesman at Canadian Bakeries, with Frances Tomkins.
Today
1948 East 7th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1926 by the City's record; 4237 Angus Drive (2014) and 621 Jervis (2003) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 8036 Cartier, 2976 West 6th and 102 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
