The Tills

In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at eight addresses

The directories print 13 people named Till at eight addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Tills at 867 East Broadway in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: a clerk (2), a checker, a conductor, a deckhand, a saleswoman and a school instructor, among others. Three of them worked for BC Electric Railway.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, South Cambie, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Till at 220 Alexander Street, a deckhand at Young & Gore Tugboat. The 1940 name section lists John N Till at 3500 Ash Street, retired. In 1940 the directory lists E Till at 1943 East 33rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Edwin Till there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists G H Till at 867 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists George H Till there as the householder, a salesman, with George H Till Jr, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, Annie E S Till, a saleswoman at Woodward's, and Gwendoline M Till. In 1940 the directory lists C F Till, a transfer, at 604 Homer Street.

Miss E F M Till is listed at 1234 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ethel F M Till there as the householder, a school instructor at N Westminster City. C F Till is listed at 3555 West 19th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles F Till there as the householder, a transfer.

H Till is listed at 3212 West 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold Till there as the householder, a checker at the BC Electric Railway, with Allan T Till, a clerk, and Thomas A Till, a clerk at the BC Electric Railway.

Today

220 Alexander, 3500 Ash, 3555 West 19th and 3212 West 6th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1943 East 33rd, 867 East Broadway, 604 Homer and 1234 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under T. Want a name removed? Tell us.
