Where the Sturgeons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Three addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a salesman (2), a baker, a checker, a longshoreman, a porter and a tailor. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Victoria-Fraserview (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J W Sturgeon at 1403 East 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John W Sturgeon there as the householder, a salesman at Copp The Shoe Man. In 1940 the directory lists C I Sturgeon at 5793 Fleming Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles I Sturgeon there as the householder, a baker, with Clarence W Sturgeon, a porter at the Union Steamship Company.

The 1940 name section lists R C Sturgeon at 1153 Haro Street. K Sturgeon is listed at 6626 Inverness Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Ken Sturgeon there as the householder, with Benjamin H Sturgeon.

W C Sturgeon is listed at 2871 Manitoba Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William C Sturgeon there as the householder, a tailor. The 1940 name section lists Silas Sturgeon at 1630 Pendrell Street, a salesman at Cowan-Dodson.

In 1940 the directory lists K Sturgeon at 1078 Thurlow Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ken Sturgeon there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists E Sturgeon at 2336 Vine Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Sturgeon there as the householder, a checker at M-W Ltd, with Eliza Sturgeon, widow of W.

In 1940 the directory lists H Sturgeon at 2128 Waverley Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold Sturgeon there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Harry E Sturgeon at 3913 West 18th Avenue as the householder, retired.

Today

2336 Vine still has its building from before 1946, dated 1912 by the City's record; 5793 Fleming (1996), 6626 Inverness (1974), 2128 Waverley (1998) and 3913 West 18th (2011) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1403 East 12th, 1153 Haro, 2871 Manitoba, 1630 Pendrell and 1078 Thurlow, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
