What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a nurse (3), a mechanic, a proprietor, a telephone operator, a waitress and a watchman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R Steven at 2910 Carolina Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert Steven there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists S M Steven at 473 East 30th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Sinclair M Steven there as the householder, a watchman at Begg Motor.

In 1940 the directory lists J Steven at 2177 East Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists James E Steven there as the householder, proprietor of Gresham Barber Shop. The 1940 name section lists F R Steven at 206 Main Street.

B Steven is listed at 3668 Maxwell Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Bernard Steven there as the householder, a mechanic at British Ropes, with Joyce E Steven, a student, and Margaret H Steven, a waitress. The 1940 name section lists Richmond K Steven at 1016 Richards Street, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss J Steven at 1006 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Joan Steven there as the householder, a telephone operator at Standard Brands, with Margaret J Steven, a nurse for Dr K L Craig. In 1940 the directory lists Miss E E Steven at 726 West 17th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Elaine E Steven there as the householder, a nurse at the Shaughnessy Hospital Canadian Government, with Elizabeth B Steven, widow of A, and Margaret Steven, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital.

Today

2177 East Pender, 1006 West 12th and 726 West 17th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2910 Carolina (1982), 473 East 30th (1971), 3668 Maxwell (1990) and 1016 Richards (2003) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 206 Main, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
