What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a carpenter, a chauffeur, a machinist, a maid, a manager and a salesman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kitsilano (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Strathcona (2), Hastings-Sunrise and Kerrisdale. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Winnifred I Stalker at 2306 Burrard Street as the householder, a stenographer at the Pions Ornamental Iron Works. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Stalker at 873 East Hastings Street. The 1940 name section lists Peter Stalker at 204 Glen Drive. The 1940 name section lists Charles J Stalker at 2840 Guelph Street, a salesman.

The 1940 name section lists Harold Staliker at 938 Howe Street. J D Stalker is listed at 5738 Marguerite Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists J Doug Stalker there as the householder, a manager at Harbour Navigation. The 1940 name section lists Gertrude Stalker at 2602 Ontario Street, a maid.

In 1940 the directory lists D Stalker at 3363 Turner Street. The 1940 name section lists David Stalker there as the householder, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists F M Stalker at 2964 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Frederick M Stalker there as the householder, a chauffeur at BC Motor Transportation.

The 1940 name section lists W Stalker at 177 West Pender Street, a machinist at the Burrard Dry Dock.

Today

5738 Marguerite and 2602 Ontario still have their buildings from before 1946; 938 Howe (1991), 2964 West 8th (1983) and 177 West Pender (1952) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2306 Burrard, 873 East Hastings, 204 Glen Drive and 2840 Guelph, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 3363 Turner, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
