What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 13: a clerk (3), a bookkeeper, a saleswoman and an upholsterer. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Mount Pleasant, Shaughnessy and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur L Souter at 1815 Alberni Street as the householder, with Don L Souter. D W Souter is listed at 2641 Eton Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Doug W Souter there as the householder, a bookkeeper. The 1940 name section lists Charles Suter at 1656 Graveley Street, an upholsterer.

In 1940 the directory lists R W Suter at 1012 Richelieu Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Robert W Suter there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Souter at 3854 West 18th Avenue, widow of F.

W Souter is listed at 3959 West 35th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Souter there as the householder, a clerk at the Post Office. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Emily F Souter at 2906 West 5th Avenue as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Freda D Souter at 423 West 6th Avenue, a clerk at the Province.

C A Souter is listed at 1877 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles A Souter there as the householder, with Charles E M Souter, a clerk at the Dominion Bank, and Kathleen E M Souter, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company. The 1940 name section lists George Suter at 300 West Georgia Street.

Today

3959 West 35th and 2906 West 5th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2906 West 5th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2641 Eton (2002), 1012 Richelieu (1950), 3854 West 18th (1964) and 300 West Georgia (1995) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1815 Alberni, 1656 Graveley, 423 West 6th and 1877 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
