A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Shafers
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses
The directories print ten people named Shafer at eight addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Shaffer. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Shafers at 1626 Parker in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: a president, a proprietor, a saleswoman, a school teacher and a waitress. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), West End (2), Downtown, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Dave Shaffer at 1172 Barclay Street, proprietor of B C Garment. E G Shafer is listed at 2185 Cambridge Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ernest G Shafer there as the householder, a president at Shafer-Haggart Ltd.
Mrs M Shafer is listed at 465 East 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mabel Shafer there as the householder, widow of N. The 1940 name section lists George Shafer at 1236 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists Neola Shaefer at 1147 Nelson Street, a waitress at the Vancouver Tamale Parlor.
Mrs M Shaffer is listed at 1626 Parker Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Molly Shaffer there as the householder, widow of J, with Philip Shaffer, a student, and Sophie Shaffer, a saleswoman. S Shaffer is listed at 2882 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Saul Shaffer there as the householder, of BC Jewellers.
The 1940 name section lists Marion A Shaffer at 4716 West 4th Avenue, a school teacher.
Today
1172 Barclay and 2882 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1147 Nelson (1986) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2185 Cambridge, 465 East 8th, 1236 Hornby, 1626 Parker and 4716 West 4th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
