What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a clerk (2), an accountant, a cook, a helper, a logger and a maid. Two of them worked for Royal Bank. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, South Cambie and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H A Searl at 1279 East 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry A Searl there as the householder, an accountant at Kydd Bros, with John W Searl, retired. In 1940 the directory lists T Searle at 433 East King Edward Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Searle there as the householder, a logger.

The 1940 name section lists Joseph Searle at 853 Jervis Street, a cook at the CNR. A J Searle is listed at 221 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alfred J Searle there as the householder, a helper at the BC Electric Railway, with Alice Searle, widow of J. The 1940 name section lists Robert F Searle at 2001 West 15th Avenue, a clerk at the Royal Bank.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Searle at 937 West 18th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Annie Searle there as the householder, a maid at the Vancouver General Hospital, with William Searle. In 1940 the directory lists E T Searle at 2028 West 43rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward T Searle there as the householder, a clerk at the Royal Bank.

The 1940 name section lists Searle at 1540 West 7th Avenue.

Today

1279 East 28th, 221 West 11th, 2001 West 15th and 2028 West 43rd still have their buildings from before 1946, 1279 East 28th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 937 West 18th (1986) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 433 East King Edward, 853 Jervis and 1540 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
