What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a salesman (2), an employee, an instrumentman, a maid, a proprietor and a sales manager, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in West Point Grey (3), Fairview (2), Mount Pleasant (2) and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Scott at 25 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Maud Scott there as the householder, widow of A C, with Grace I Scott, a stenographer at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists Miss A E Scott at 141 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Annie E Scott there as the householder.
The 1940 name section lists William Scott at 674 West 12th Avenue, a salesman for Horne Taylor. The 1940 name section lists William G Scott at 1275 West 12th Avenue, a salesman at Spencer's. The 1940 name section lists Agnes Scott at 1993 West 12th Avenue, a maid for A H Hanna.
A W Scott is listed at 3994 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur W Scott there as the householder, a sales manager at Western Wholesale Drug and Cunningham Drug, with A Lorelei Scott, a student. B W C Scott is listed at 4307 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Bryant W C Scott there as the householder, proprietor of Kitsilano Meat Market.
J H Scott is listed at 4586 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James H Scott there as the householder, an instrumentman at the City of Vancouver, with Clive M Scott, who worked for the BC Telephone.
Today
25 West 12th, 1275 West 12th, 1993 West 12th, 4307 West 12th and 4586 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1275 West 12th and 1993 West 12th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 141 West 12th, 674 West 12th and 3994 West 12th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Scotts

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
