What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a driver (2), a bus boy, an employee, a fireman and a laundry foreman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists P Rudick at 5335 Dumfries Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Peter Rudick there as the householder, a fireman. In 1940 the directory lists J S Ruddick at 547 East 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

G Ruddick is listed at 1851 East 40th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Ruddick there as the householder, a driver at Cascade Laundry. Mrs S Ruddick is listed at 3209 East 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Susan Ruddick there as the householder, widow of L K.

Mrs S Ruddick is listed at 1183 Granville Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mary M Ruddick there, who worked for the Cave Supper Club, with Michael Ruddick, a bus boy at the Vancouver Hotel. P Rudick is listed at 748 Hamilton Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists H Ruddick at 3111 Renfrew Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry Ruddick there as the householder, a driver at Woodland Manufacturing. In 1940 the directory lists F W G Ruddick at 2683 West 6th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists F W George Ruddick there as the householder, a laundry foreman at the Vancouver General Hospital.

Today

1183 Granville still has its building from before 1946, dated 1912 by the City's record; 1851 East 40th (1986), 3209 East 6th (1985), 3111 Renfrew (1990) and 2683 West 6th (1983) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 5335 Dumfries, 547 East 12th and 748 Hamilton, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
