What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: a bookkeeper, a clerk, a driver, a longshoreman, a machinist and a maid, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1915 the directory lists Hans Rudd at 522 Keefer Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Rudd at 233 Abbott Street. In 1940 the directory lists R F Rudd at 6560 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists R Frank Rudd there as the householder, a bookkeeper at Western Wholesale Drug.

In 1940 the directory lists W H Rudd at 1213 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section lists William H Rudd there as the householder, a salesman. The 1940 name section lists Richard W Rudd at 1556 East 5th Avenue, a clerk at Johnston Motor.

A B Rudd is listed at 4955 Joyce Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Adolph B Rudd there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Nancy Rudd at 1980 Kitchener Street, a maid for F C Stricker.

In 1940 the directory lists R J Rudd at 2735 Victoria Drive. The 1940 name section lists Robert J Rudd there as the householder, a manager at Wenatchee Rex Spray, with Robert J Rudd Jr, a driver at King's Motor Cartage. In 1940 the directory lists W Rudd at 3520 West 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Rudd there as the householder, a machinist at Boyles Bros, with Isabelle Rudd, a student.

The 1940 name section lists Thomas Rudd at 3565 West 18th Avenue, retired.

Today

522 Keefer, 233 Abbott, 6560 Angus Drive, 1980 Kitchener, 3520 West 14th and 3565 West 18th still have their buildings from before 1946, 522 Keefer and 233 Abbott on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1556 East 5th (1987) and 4955 Joyce (1976) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1213 Barclay and 2735 Victoria Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
