What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a patrolman (2), an assistant surveyor, a clerk, a notary public, a salesman and a stenographer, among others. Two of them worked for Citizens Night Patrol.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Kitsilano (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Miss G Rothwell at 843 Cardero Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gertrude Rothwell there as the householder, a stenographer at Hood Bros. In 1940 the directory lists W L Rothwell at 5419 Culloden Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists W Lionel Rothwell there as the householder, a patrolman at Citizens Night Patrol.

In 1940 the directory lists S L Rothwell at 1435 East 29th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Sam L Rothwell there as the householder, a patrolman at Citizens Night Patrol. The 1940 name section lists Jack Rothwell at 1203 Seymour Street.

W S Rothwell is listed at 2656 Waterloo Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists W Scott Rothwell there as the householder, a surveyor at BC Insurance Underwriters. H L Rothwell is listed at 3235 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Horatio L Rothwell there as the householder, a notary public.

J T Rothwell is listed at 4453 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John T Rothwell there as the householder, a clerk at the Canadian Government, with Doug G T Rothwell, who worked for Arbutus S&D. The 1940 name section lists Edgar P Rothwell at 550 West 13th Avenue, a salesman at Martin & Richards.

In 1940 the directory lists J M Rothwell at 3475 West 18th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James M Rothwell there as the householder, an assistant surveyor at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists H L Rothwell, a notary public, at 1451 West Broadway.

Today

843 Cardero, 1203 Seymour and 4453 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946; 5419 Culloden (1966), 1435 East 29th (1983), 2656 Waterloo (1995), 3235 West 10th (1991) and 3475 West 18th (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1451 West Broadway, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 550 West 13th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
