The directories print 15 people named Rorke at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Rourke. What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 15: a helper (2), a saleswoman (2), an agent, a clerk, a dish washer and a laborer, among others. Two of them worked for Canadian Boxes. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Arbutus Ridge, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Nora Rourke at 849 East 10th Avenue, widow of T. The 1940 name section lists George Rourke at 1390 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Allan D Rourke at 790 Howe Street, a clerk at the Royal Bank.

M Rourke is listed at 6351 Prince Albert Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Math Rourke there as the householder, a laborer, with Doris M Rourke, a helper at Canadian Boxes, and Keeton F Rourke, a helper at Canadian Boxes. The 1940 name section lists Alex Rourke at 1039 Richards Street, a dish washer at Golden Arrow Creameries.

In 1940 the directory lists E Rorke at 2295 West 1st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Edward Rorke there as the householder, a printing supervisor at the Sun. In 1940 the directory lists R Rourke at 2142 West 38th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Robert Rourke there as the householder, with Gordon H Rourke, a mechanic for Roy Howard, and Mary Rourke, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company.

In 1940 the directory lists E D Rorke at 1855 West 43rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists E D'Alton Rorke there as the householder, an agent at National Life Assce, with Clarence F Rorke. In 1940 the directory lists J Rorke at 827 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists James Rorke there as the householder, a waiter, with James Rorke Jr, a millworker, and Cath Rorke, a saleswoman at Woodward's.

Today

2295 West 1st still has its building from before 1946, dated 1930 by the City's record; 6351 Prince Albert (1983) and 1855 West 43rd (1994) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 849 East 10th, 1390 Granville, 790 Howe, 1039 Richards, 2142 West 38th and 827 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
