What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a branch manager, a cleaner, an engineer, a nurse, a packer and a salesman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Marpole and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W M Ripley at 134 East 2nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William A Ripley there as the householder, a steel worker. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Ripley at 3128 East 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Emma Ripley there as the householder, with Alberta D Ripley, a nurse at the Glen Hospital.

The 1940 name section lists Oswald K Ripley at 159 East Hastings Street, an engineer. T E Ripley is listed at 7719 Montcalm Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas E Ripley there as the householder, a salesman at Malcolm & Son.

E Ripley is listed at 2659 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edwin Ripley there as the householder, a packer at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Edward J Ripley at 1945 West 49th Avenue, a branch manager at H V Cowie Co. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Ruby Ripley at 3373 William Street, a cleaner at the Marine Building.

Today

2659 West 14th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1928 by the City's record; 3128 East 8th (1990), 7719 Montcalm (1965) and 1945 West 49th (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 134 East 2nd and 3373 William, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 159 East Hastings, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
