What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: a butcher, a laborer, a painter, a salesman and a saleswoman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Mount Pleasant and Renfrew-Collingwood. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert Rideout at 970 Burrard Street, a painter. B J B Rideout is listed at 3403 East 23rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Benjamin J B Rideout there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Walter W Ridout at 468 East 5th Avenue, a laborer.
In 1940 the directory lists W J Rideout at 1892 Kingsway. The 1940 name section lists Job Rideout at 2834 Spruce Street. The 1940 name section lists Doreen Rideout at 3345 West 11th Avenue, a saleswoman at Famous.
W C Rideout is listed at 1953 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William C Rideout there as the householder, a butcher at Burns & Co. R B C Ridout is listed at 2861 West 34th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Reginald B C Ridout there as the householder, a salesman.
Mrs M Rideout is listed at 1876 West 6th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Martha Rideout there as the householder, widow of W C.
Today
2861 West 34th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1932 by the City's record; 970 Burrard (1975), 3403 East 23rd (2009), 468 East 5th (2010) and 3345 West 11th (2021) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1892 Kingsway, 2834 Spruce, 1953 West 2nd and 1876 West 6th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
