What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: a cutter, a miner, an orderly, a packer and a pipe fitter.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, South Cambie, Strathcona and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Ratcliffe at 3347 Charles Street, an orderly at the Vancouver General Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Albert Ratcliffe at 1478 East 27th Avenue, a miner. In 1940 the directory lists F Ratcliffe at 1003 East 58th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Fred Ratcliffe there as the householder, a pipe fitter.
The 1940 name section lists H Ratcliff at 123 Powell Street. G Ratcliffe is listed at 1521 Salsbury Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gordon Ratcliffe there as the householder.
R Ratcliffe is listed at 262 Vernon Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Richard Ratcliffe there as the householder, a packer, with Mrs Elizabeth Ratcliffe. The 1940 name section lists Lottie Ratcliffe at 2945 West 12th Avenue.
In 1940 the directory lists L R Ratcliffe at 520 West 27th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Leslie R Ratcliffe there as the householder, a cutter at Grant & Sons. In 1940 the directory lists E J Ratcliffe at 2901 West 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too.
Today
3347 Charles, 1521 Salsbury Drive and 520 West 27th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1478 East 27th (1985) and 2945 West 12th (1991) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1003 East 58th, 123 Powell, 262 Vernon Drive and 2901 West 34th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
