What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the 13: a helper (2), a barrister, a chocolate dipper, a collector, an employee and a fireman. Two of them worked for Burrard Dry Dock. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (2), Fairview (2), Strathcona (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park, Shaughnessy and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In June 1929 J C Ralston took out the permit to build a house at 5357 Angus Drive. In 1940 the directory lists J C Ralston at 5357 Angus Drive; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James C Ralston there as the householder, a barrister, with Don Ralston, a student. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J Ralston at 4426 Dunbar Street.
The 1940 name section lists Cath Ralston at 252 East 1st Avenue, widow of G. In 1940 the directory lists R Ralston at 215 East 21st Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Robert Ralston there as the householder, who worked for Ford Motor. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Emma Ralston at 204 Glen Drive.
J C Ralston, a barrister, is listed at 475 Howe Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Ralston at 2102 Ontario Street, a helper at the Burrard Dry Dock. The 1940 name section lists C Ralston at 515 Seymour Street, a helper at the Burrard Dry Dock.
In 1940 the directory lists T Ralston at 1016 West 12th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Ralston there as the householder, a collector at M T Co. The 1940 name section lists Grace Ralston at 568 West 27th Avenue, a chocolate dipper at Welch's. The 1940 name section lists Sarah L Ralston at 2426 West 6th Avenue, widow of C C.
The 1940 name section lists John J Ralston at 1694 West Broadway, a fireman at R & H Sawmill.
Today
215 East 21st, 475 Howe, 515 Seymour and 568 West 27th still have their buildings from before 1946; 5357 Angus Drive (1996), 252 East 1st (1984), 1016 West 12th (1958) and 2426 West 6th (2006) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 4426 Dunbar, 204 Glen Drive, 2102 Ontario and 1694 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under R. Want a name removed? Tell us.
