What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 13: a school teacher (2), a stenographer (2), a branch manager, a cashier, a clerk and a machinist, among others. Three of them worked for Vancouver City.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W Putnam at 7111 Cypress Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Walter Putnam there as the householder, a school teacher, with Doug Putnam, a clerk at the City of Vancouver, and Elinor Putnam, a stenographer at Great West Life. In 1940 the directory lists G E Putnam at 5546 Highbury Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George E Putnam there as the householder, a salesman for W J Heads, with Margaret I Putnam, a stenographer.

The 1940 name section lists Harold Putnam at 467 West 10th Avenue, a cashier at North American Life. A L Putnam is listed at 1050 West 27th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Arnold L Putnam there as the householder, a branch manager at the Royal Bank.

P L Putnam is listed at 1833 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Perley L Putnam there as the householder, a machinist at the Burrard Dry Dock. J F Putnam is listed at 2653 West 3rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James F Putnam there as the householder, a president at U-Drive and of Hornby Garage, with Beatrice A Putnam, a school teacher, Edith E Putnam, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital, and Gilbert G Putnam.

The 1940 name section lists Willis G Putnam at 3836 Windsor Street.

Today

7111 Cypress, 5546 Highbury and 2653 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 467 West 10th, 1050 West 27th, 1833 West 3rd and 3836 Windsor, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
