What they did

The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 17: a cook, a helper, a janitor, a labeller, a local shipper and a machinist operator, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Arbutus Ridge, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J Pickard at 5870 Beatrice Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Pickard there as the householder, a painter, with Vera N Pickard, a saleswoman at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists E Roy Pickard at 1059 East 11th Avenue, a helper at Sitka Spruce Lumber, with Florence Pickard, and Roy W Pickard, a local shipper for Sitka Spruce.

F Pickard is listed at 1962 Kitchener Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Fred Pickard there as the householder, a janitor, with M Irene Pickard, a machinist operator. The 1940 name section lists William Pickard at 1402 Robson Street, a cook at the Union Steamship Company.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M B Pickard at 1338 Walnut Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists M Beatrice Pickard there as the householder, widow of W A, with Gordon J Pickard, a packer for W H Malkin. In 1940 the directory lists T D Pickard at 1585 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists T Dwight Pickard there as the householder, a mining engineer, with Murray K Pickard, a student at UBC, and Robert D Pickard, a student.

In 1940 the directory lists J C Pickard at 2866 West 29th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John C Pickard there as the householder, proprietor of Green Mill Sandwich Shop. In 1940 the directory lists W Pickard, a shoe repairer, at 1420 West Pender Street.

W Pickard is listed at 1422 West Pender Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Florence Pickard there, a labeller at Hedlund's.

Today

1059 East 11th and 1585 West 15th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1585 West 15th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 5870 Beatrice (1980), 1338 Walnut (1979) and 2866 West 29th (2004) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1962 Kitchener, 1402 Robson, 1420 West Pender and 1422 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
