What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a manager (2), a clerk, a delivery, a dressmaker, a laborer and a millworker, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Marpole, Riley Park and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists M R Perrin at 6111 Adera Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Marshall R Perrin there as the householder, with Sarah Perrin, widow of W. In 1940 the directory lists J W Perrin, a naturopath, at 2518 Alberta Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Emma Perrin there, a dressmaker.

The 1940 name section lists Lester Perrin at 1019 Dunsmuir Street, a manager for H M Frazer. R Perrin is listed at 433 East 23rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Roderick Perrin there as the householder, of Perrin & Gray, with Gladys M Perrin, a clerk at the BC Government.

F H Perrin is listed at 4718 Fleming Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Frank H Perrin there as the householder, a millworker at Sitka Spruce Lumber. H F Perrin, an optometrist, is listed at 825 Granville Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists D Perin at 8745 Oak Street. The 1940 name section lists Dominic Perin there as the householder, with Ernest Perin, a delivery at Thrift Meat Market, and Victor Perin, a salesman at Wilbee's Service Stores. The 1940 name section lists William A Perrin at 7177 Sherbrooke Street, a laborer.

A Perrin is listed at 485 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Perrin there as the householder, a manager at the Cumberland Apartments. The 1940 name section lists Etta Perrin at 1877 West Broadway, a widow.

Today

433 East 23rd, 825 Granville and 485 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 6111 Adera (1995) and 4718 Fleming (1965) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2518 Alberta, 1019 Dunsmuir, 8745 Oak, 7177 Sherbrooke and 1877 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
