A family name in Vancouver's city directories

The Ogstons

In the city directories 1935–1940 · seven people at five addresses

The directories print seven people named Ogston at five addresses between 1935 and 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods. The same first name and initials follow one family between addresses (inferred); the others share only the surname, so we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Ogstons at 3395 West 8th in 1940.

Where the Ogstons lived

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Dunbar-Southlands and Mount Pleasant. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1935 the directory lists J R Ogston at 2649 Quebec Street. In 1940 J R Ogston is listed at 3532 West 22nd Avenue (inferred): the same name and initials as at 2649 Quebec in 1935, so most likely the same person; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists J Roy Ogston there as the householder, an operator at Addressograph-Multigraph.

A Ogston is listed at 3562 West 3rd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alec Ogston there as the householder, a manager at the Interior Mutual Benefit Association. G A Ogston is listed at 3457 West 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists G Alfred Ogston there as the householder, a mechanic at International Harvester.

G T Ogston is listed at 3395 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George T Ogston there as the householder, a gardener at the Vancouver Parks Board, with Christina Ogston, a saleswoman at the Hudson's Bay Company, Eveline G Ogston, a saleswoman at Saba Bros, and Robert Ogston, a salesman at A G Spalding & Bros.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under O. Want a name removed? Tell us.
