Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a proprietor (3), a fisherman, a helper, a laborer and a logger. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Strathcona (4), Fairview (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists M Murakami at 2112 Alberta Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists M Murakami there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists Shotarc Murakami at 658 Alexander Street.

Mrs K Murakami is listed at 803 Campbell Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kinu Murakami there, widow of T. J S Murakami is listed at 1071 East 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James S Murakami there as the householder, proprietor of Empress Studio.

K Murakami is listed at 835 East Cordova Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Katsugi Murakami there as the householder, a logger. The 1940 name section lists Shozo Murakami at 121 Heatley Avenue, a fisherman.

In 1940 the directory lists S Murakami at 3201 McGill Street. The 1940 name section lists Shige Murakami there as the householder, a laborer for T Kirkpatrick. The 1940 name section lists Taro Murakami at 20 North Templeton Drive, proprietor of Charlie's Grocery.

H Murakami is listed at 1662 West 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hatsuki Murakami there as the householder, a helper at Alberta Lumber, with Mrs Yoshi Murakami. The 1940 name section lists Y Murakami at 1024 West 6th Avenue.

In 1940 the directory lists Y Murakami at 2796 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Y (T) Murakami there as the householder, proprietor of Broadway Bus Shop.

Today

2112 Alberta, 658 Alexander and 1071 East 12th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2112 Alberta on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 121 Heatley (1971) and 1662 West 2nd (1964) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 803 Campbell, 835 East Cordova, 3201 McGill, 20 North Templeton Drive, 1024 West 6th and 2796 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
