What they did

Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Strathcona (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists C B Mott, in coal and wood, at 656 East 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Clarence B Mott there, a coal and wood dealer. In 1940 the directory lists Miss M J Mott at 2096 East 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Mary J Mott there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone.
In 1940 the directory lists G F Mott at 411 East 45th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Geoffrey F Mott there as the householder, proprietor of the Mott Battery Service. The 1940 name section lists Alice Mott at 872 East Hastings Street, widow of G. The 1940 name section lists William E Mott at 923 East Pender Street.
In 1940 the directory lists F E Mott at 3097 Turner Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank E Mott there as the householder, a floorman at the Pacific Mills. In 1940 the directory lists S I Mott at 2326 West 34th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Sears I Mott there as the householder, retired, with Chester W Mott, a mechanic, and Rowland I Mott, a radio engineer.
In 1940 the directory lists B H Mott at 3053 West 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Benjamin H Mott there as the householder, proprietor of Grandview Lumber, with Benjamin J Mott, who worked for Grandview Lumber. Today
656 East 11th, 872 East Hastings, 2326 West 34th and 3053 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946; 411 East 45th (2019) and 1140 West Pender (1984) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2096 East 34th, 923 East Pender and 3097 Turner, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
