What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 13: a proprietor (2), a barber, a cleaner, a clerk, a confectioner and a department manager, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Strathcona (2), Fairview, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Joseph C Moon at 823 Broughton Street, a sales manager at Brown, Fraser. J M Moon is listed at 2025 Cornwall Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John M Moon there as the householder, a clerk at the Royal Bank.

Miss A G Moon is listed at 6641 Cypress Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Annie G Moon there as the householder, a department manager at Famous, with Lucy R Moon, a saleswoman at Saba Bros, and Minnie E Moon. J Moon is listed at 169 East 22nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Moon there as the householder, a cleaner at the Hudson's Bay Company.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Elsie Moon at 670 East Broadway, proprietor of Court Confectionery. In 1940 the directory lists Fa Mon, in printers, at 137 East Pender Street. Sun Mon, a barber, is listed at 212 East Pender Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sun Mon there, a barber.

The 1940 name section lists Myer Moon at 753 Powell Street, an upholsterer for N Nelson. The 1940 name section lists Chow York Mon at 1760 West 3rd Avenue, proprietor of Kitsilano Laundry. Kee Mon, a confectioner, is listed at 9 West Pender Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kee Mon there, a confectioner.

Today

823 Broughton and 2025 Cornwall still have their buildings from before 1946; 169 East 22nd (2007) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6641 Cypress, 670 East Broadway, 137 East Pender, 212 East Pender, 753 Powell, 1760 West 3rd and 9 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
