Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), West End (2), Downtown, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Shaughnessy and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists G D Mead at 2035 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists G Davidson Mead there as the householder, a police officer at the BC Government, with Lottie Mead, widow of G D. In 1940 the directory lists C R Mead at 2224 Cornwall Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Charles R Mead there as the householder, a railway mail clerk at the Canadian Government, with Bruce R Mead, an assistant at UBC, and Mrs Kath A Mead, proprietor of The Crofton.
In 1940 the directory lists C H Mead at 2047 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clare H Mead there as the householder, a chief clerk at the Canadian Government Telegraph Service, with William J Mead, retired. In 1940 the directory lists W J Mead at 373 East Broadway. The 1940 name section lists William J Mead there as the householder, proprietor of Mead's Dairy.
In 1940 the directory lists W J Mead at 637 East Hastings Street. The 1940 name section lists Walter J Mead there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists C Mead at 1154 Gilford Street. The 1940 name section lists Charles Mead there as the householder.
The 1940 name section lists James Mead at 1060 Granville Street. F E Mead is listed at 2040 Mannering Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Francis E Mead there as the householder, a warehouseman for Kelly Douglas, with Edward J Mead, a machinist operator at General Steel Wares, and Gladys C Mead, a helper for Kelly Douglas. The 1940 name section lists Kate Mead at 2003 West 35th Avenue, a maid for C E Smyth.
Today
2047 East 22nd, 1154 Gilford, 1060 Granville, 2040 Mannering and 2003 West 35th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1154 Gilford and 1060 Granville on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2035 Barclay (1959) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2224 Cornwall, 373 East Broadway and 637 East Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Meads
Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Mead name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
