What they did

The name section prints a trade for three of the eleven: a laborer, a machinist and a nurse. Four are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), Fairview, Grandview-Woodland and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs G McMurray at 950 Bidwell Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gertrude McMurray there as the householder, widow of N. In 1940 the directory lists M McMurray at 6583 Dumfries Street. The 1940 name section lists Math McMurray there as the householder, a laborer.

In 1940 the directory lists J McMurray at 1030 East 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists James McMurray there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L D McMurray at 16 East 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Lillie D McMurray there as the householder, widow of R.

In 1940 the directory lists H McMurray at 2305 East 2nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Hampton McMurray there as the householder, a machinist at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists E E McMurray at 1637 Harwood Street. The 1940 name section lists Edward E McMurray there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Oswald McMurray at 952 Hornby Street. Mrs E R McMurray is listed at 1762 Robson Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Elsie R McMurray there as the householder, widow of W R. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth McMurray at 1045 West 11th Avenue, a nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital.

Today

1030 East 10th, 2305 East 2nd and 1045 West 11th still have their buildings from before 1946; 950 Bidwell (1991) and 6583 Dumfries (1972) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 16 East 15th, 1637 Harwood, 952 Hornby, 1762 Robson and 1125 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
