What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the twelve: a laborer, a miner, a nurse, a proprietor, a salesman and a shingle weaver. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (3), Downtown (2), Sunset (2), Mount Pleasant and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John McGovern at 160 Cambie Street, a miner. T S McGiveron is listed at 1124 East 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas S McGiveron there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists May McGiveron at 419 East 46th Avenue, widow of R.

In 1940 the directory lists R McGiveron at 1118 East 54th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Robert McGiveron there as the householder, a salesman at Associated Dairies. The 1940 name section lists Alberta McGovern at 1727 Macdonald Street, widow of J M. The 1940 name section lists McGovern (no first name printed) at 1164 Robson Street.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss C A McGovern at 2275 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Rose McGovern there as the householder, proprietor of the S'en Registration Bureau, with Cath A McGovern, a nurse. In 1940 the directory lists M McGovern at 2033 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Michael McGovern there as the householder, a laborer, with Mary K McGovern, an elevator operator at Spencer's, and John J McGovern, a student.

The 1940 name section lists J McGovern at 57 West Cordova Street, a shingle weaver.

Today

1727 Macdonald, 2275 West 7th and 57 West Cordova still have their buildings from before 1946, 57 West Cordova on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 419 East 46th (2004), 1118 East 54th (2021) and 1164 Robson (1955) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 160 Cambie, 1124 East 12th and 2033 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
