A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The McGinns
In the city directories 1940 · 13 people at seven addresses
The directories print 13 people named McGinn at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three McGinns at 1225 Barclay in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for eight of the 13: an accountant, an assistant credit manager, a cannery worker, a feeder, a millworker and an operator, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Renfrew-Collingwood (2), West End (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Kitsilano. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Miss B R McGinn at 1225 Barclay Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Barbara R McGinn there as the householder, an operator at the BC Telephone, with Mary McGinn, a widow. In 1940 the directory lists J McGinn at 5408 Cecil Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John McGinn there as the householder, a stevedore, with Audrey K McGinn.
The 1940 name section lists Alice McGinn at 1636 Clark Drive, a cannery worker. R M McGinn is listed at 1675 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Robert M McGinn there as the householder, proprietor of the Commercial Apartments, with Robert D McGinn, a student at UBC.
F J E McGinn is listed at 1051 Pacific Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Fred J E McGinn there as the householder, an assistant credit manager for Kelly Douglas. D J McGinn is listed at 3645 Renfrew Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Daniel J McGinn there as the householder, a lumber inspector, with Daniel J McGinn Jr, a feeder for Mohawk Handle, Harry G McGinn, a millworker, and Marie A McGinn.
F McGinn is listed at 2625 West 3rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank McGinn there as the householder, an accountant for Hobson Christie.
Today
5408 Cecil, 1675 East 14th, 3645 Renfrew and 2625 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1225 Barclay (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1636 Clark Drive and 1051 Pacific, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
