What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: an employee, a lineman, a police officer, a proprietor and a school teacher. Some worked for the same employer: two for BC Telephone and two for Vancouver City. Four are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (4), Kitsilano (2) and Mount Pleasant (2). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A MacDonald at 12 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary Macdonald at 175 West 10th Avenue, widow of R F. In 1940 the directory lists H McDonald at 666 West 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Hugh McDonald there as the householder, retired.
The 1940 name section lists Ella MacDonald at 835 West 10th Avenue, widow of J, with Gertrude E MacDonald, a school teacher. Mrs I McDonald is listed at 1000 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Isabella McDonald there as the householder, widow of D R.
Mrs L N Macdonald is listed at 1298 West 10th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Lillian N Macdonald there as the householder, widow of W. C W Macdonald is listed at 2696 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Macdonald there as the householder, a police officer at the City of Vancouver, with Mrs Alice A Macdonald, proprietor of Shaughnessy B, and Irene M Macdonald.
G J McDonald is listed at 3536 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Gilbert J McDonald there as the householder, a lineman at the BC Telephone, with John O McDonald, who worked for the BC Telephone.
Today
12 West 10th, 1298 West 10th and 3536 West 10th still have their buildings from before 1946, 12 West 10th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 175 West 10th (1966), 835 West 10th (1982) and 2696 West 10th (2006) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 666 West 10th and 1000 West 10th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
