What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the 13: a book page editor, an entomologist, a longshoreman, a manager, a millwright and a radiotrician, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Mount Pleasant (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Kitsilano, Renfrew-Collingwood and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F D Mathers at 1926 Aspen Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick D Mathers there as the householder, a manager at Westminster Canners. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A M Mathers at 850 Bidwell Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Ada M Mathers there as the householder, widow of W J, with Ruth E Mathers, a typist at the Dominion Income Tax.

The 1940 name section lists William Mathers at 930 Drake Street. J Mathers is listed at 5046 Earles Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James Mathers there as the householder, a millwright at Pacific Veneer.

H M Mathers is listed at 166 East 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Homer M Mathers there as the householder. H J Mathers is listed at 643 East 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists H Jay Mathers there as the householder, a longshoreman.

The 1940 name section lists Margaret A Mathers at 813 Hornby Street. The 1940 name section lists M Kathleen L Mathers at 3395 Point Grey Road, a book page editor at the Province. The 1940 name section lists Alice S Mathers at 2002 Robson Street, a stenographer for Prud Assce.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Mathers at 5820 Wallace Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Emily Mathers there as the householder, a saleswoman at Famous, with Harold Mathers, a radiotrician. In 1940 the directory lists W G Mathers at 4167 West 12th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists William G Mathers there, an entomologist.

Today

1926 Aspen, 166 East 11th, 643 East 14th and 4167 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946; 850 Bidwell (1966) and 5820 Wallace (1977) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 930 Drake, 5046 Earles, 813 Hornby, 3395 Point Grey Road and 2002 Robson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
