The Marks

In the city directories 1940 · 15 people at ten addresses

The directories print 15 people named Mark at ten addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Marks at 1243 Thurlow in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the 15: a cashier, a clerk, a heater, a helper, a maid and an operator, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Mark at 2736 Cambridge Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ella Mark there as the householder, widow of J J, with George W Mark, a helper at Leek & Co. The 1940 name section lists Sam Mark at 537 Drake Street, proprietor of London Laundry.

A R Mark is listed at 3579 Dunbar Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists A Russell Mark there as the householder, a western director at the International Accountants Society Inc. The 1940 name section lists Eleanor Mark at 3047 East 20th Avenue, a maid for A J Bowden.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss M Mark at 2717 Franklin Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary Mark there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists P A Mark at 3005 Grant Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Stan Mark at 2136 Main Street, a heater at the Burrard Dry Dock.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Marybelle Mark at 2231 Oxford Street. Mrs J Mark is listed at 1243 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Jennie Mark there as the householder, widow of S, with Eileen Mark, a cashier at Woodward's, May Mark, a clerk at the Hudson's Bay Company, and Molly Mark, an operator at the BC Telephone.

T H Mark is listed at 2804 West 1st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thisalton H Mark there as the householder.

Today

2736 Cambridge, 3579 Dunbar, 2717 Franklin, 2231 Oxford, 1243 Thurlow and 2804 West 1st still have their buildings from before 1946, 1243 Thurlow on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3047 East 20th (2005) and 3005 Grant (2006) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 537 Drake and 2136 Main, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
