What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: an attendant, a district foreman, an electrician, a jam maker, a machinist and a president, among others.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Killarney, Kitsilano, Marpole, Mount Pleasant and Oakridge. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists D S Mansell at 6070 Cartier Street. V F Mansel is listed at 3202 East 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Valentine F Mansel there as the householder, a district foreman at the City of Vancouver, with Lloyd Mansel.
H Mansell is listed at 230 East 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Herbert Mansell there as the householder, an electrician. V F Mansell is listed at 860 East 35th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Valentine F Mansell there as the householder, a machinist at Boyles Bros.
G C Mansel is listed at 1424 East Broadway in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George C Mansel there as the householder, a waiter, with Mabel Mansel, a jam maker at Empress Manufacturing. F C Mansel is listed at 5786 Lancaster Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick C Mansel there as the householder, an attendant at Thompson & Graham.
T S Maunsell is listed at 1856 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Terry S Maunsell there as the householder, a president at Maunsell & Co Ltd. The 1940 name section lists Frederick C Mansel at 3774 West 24th Avenue.
In 1940 the directory lists J W Mansell at 1727 West 59th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John W Mansell there as the householder, proprietor of De-Luxe Shoe Repairing. The 1940 name section lists Minton Mansell at 1151 West Hastings Street, a statistician at Western City.
Today
1856 West 13th, 3774 West 24th and 1727 West 59th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1856 West 13th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 5786 Lancaster (1969) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6070 Cartier, 3202 East 13th, 230 East 14th, 860 East 35th, 1424 East Broadway and 1151 West Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
