What they did

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kitsilano (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew-Collingwood, Shaughnessy, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J V Manley at 2719 Alma Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John V Manley there as the householder, an engineer at the CPR, with John R Manley, a naturopath for E J Fridleifson. The 1940 name section lists Hilda Manley at 1899 Dunbar Street.

W Manley is listed at 1734 East 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William Manley there as the householder, a branch manager at Safeway. Rev J D Manly is listed at 3592 East 29th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Rev John D Manly there as the householder, retired.

D B Manley is listed at 5075 Marguerite Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Davison B Manley there as the householder, a broker. D V Manley is listed at 485 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Doug V Manley there as the householder, a refinery foreman at Standard Oil.

J Manley is listed at 3731 West 19th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M A Manley at 2177 West 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Miriam A Manley there as the householder, with Don R Manley, in printing at the Sun. The 1940 name section lists Bryan W Manley at 2177 West 4th Avenue, a clerk.

The 1940 name section lists Fanny M Manley at 1040 West Georgia Street, a housekeeper for Rev C Davies.

Today

2719 Alma, 1899 Dunbar, 3592 East 29th, 5075 Marguerite, 485 West 14th and 3731 West 19th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1899 Dunbar on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1040 West Georgia (1985) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2177 West 44th and 2177 West 4th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 1734 East 11th, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
