Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Marpole, Mount Pleasant, Oakridge and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John C Madill at 663 Cambie Street. S M Madill is listed at 2104 East 38th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sam M Madill there as the householder, a mechanic at McCallum's Hardware.
A O Madill is listed at 2783 East 45th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Arthur O Madill there as the householder, a trainman at the CPR, with Betty E Madill, an operator at the BC Telephone, and Marie A Madill, who worked for the BC Telephone. H W Madill is listed at 156 East 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Henry W Madill there as the householder, with Mrs F Marion Madill, proprietor of Handy Store.
W L Madill is listed at 8092 Shaughnessy Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William L Madill there as the householder, an instructor for Brisbane Aviation. B F Madill is listed at 1825 West 1st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists B Franklin Madill there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver.
J E Madill is listed at 1332 West 47th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James E Madill there as the householder. A H Madill is listed at 6449 Yew Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Armour H Madill there as the householder, a trainman at the CPR.
Today
156 East 8th and 6449 Yew still have their buildings from before 1946, 156 East 8th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2104 East 38th (2005), 2783 East 45th (2003) and 1332 West 47th (2013) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 663 Cambie, 8092 Shaughnessy and 1825 West 1st, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
