What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the eleven: a painter (2), a chief clerk, a clerk, a cosmetician, a driver and a manager, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Strathcona and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Benjamin Lunn at 1322 Beach Avenue, a shipper at Spencer's, with Ernest Lunn, a messenger. C H Lunn is listed at 2865 East 2nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Charles H Lunn there as the householder, a driver at Woodward's, with Elsie I Lunn, a cosmetician at Cunningham Drug.

G C Lunn is listed at 950 East Broadway in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George C Lunn there as the householder, a chief clerk at the BC Electric Railway. Hing Fong Lun is listed at 320 East Pender Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Hing Fong Lun there as the householder.

C H Lunn is listed at 1148 Victoria Drive in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles H Lunn there as the householder, a mechanic at Oxford Motors. B C Lunn, a painter, is listed at 2737 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Bernard C Lunn there, a painter, with Doug J Lunn, a painter.

G Lunn is listed at 985 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George Lunn there as the householder, a manager at Continental Fruit, with Margaret J Lunn, a clerk at the Province.

Today

2737 West 13th (2018) and 985 West 15th (1981) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1322 Beach, 2865 East 2nd, 950 East Broadway, 320 East Pender and 1148 Victoria Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
