The Lincolns

In the city directories 1940 · nine people at six addresses

The directories print nine people named Lincoln at six addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Lincolns at 30 East 15th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the nine: a conductor, a dairyman, a foreman, a helper, a manager and a painter, among others. Two of them worked for Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Downtown, Fairview, Kitsilano and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W L Lincoln at 921 East 14th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William L Lincoln there as the householder, a foreman at Pioneer Laundry. In 1940 the directory lists G H Lincoln, a painter, at 30 East 15th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George H Lincoln there as the householder, a painter, with Susan Lincoln, a helper at the Vancouver Hotel, and Thomas Lincoln.

In 1940 the directory lists A E Lincoln at 2737 Oak Street. The 1940 name section lists Arthur E Lincoln there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists E S Lincoln at 987 West 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Eric S Lincoln there as the householder, a purchasing agent at the Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association, with George Lincoln, a dairyman at the Fraser Valley Milk Producers' Association.

In 1940 the directory lists H G Lincoln at 2725 West 7th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Henry G Lincoln there as the householder, a manager at Clark Fruit. In 1940 the directory lists A J Lincoln, a violin, at 603 West Hastings Street. The 1940 name section lists Alfred J Lincoln there, a violin maker and repairer.

Today

30 East 15th (1966) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 921 East 14th, 2737 Oak, 987 West 26th, 2725 West 7th and 603 West Hastings, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
