What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the eight: a helper, a logger and rooms to let, a nurse, a salesman and a stenographer. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Mount Pleasant (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kitsilano and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists W Lehman at 561 East Hastings Street. Mrs H Lehman is listed at 2760 Graveley Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Harriet Lehman there as the householder, widow of I.

A Lehmann, rooms to let, is listed at 989 Hornby Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alfred Lehmann there as the householder, a logger who kept rooms to let. The 1940 name section lists John F Lehmann at 153 West 12th Avenue as the householder, a helper at Shell Oil. In 1940 the directory lists J F Lehmann at 155 West 12th Avenue.

E A Lehman is listed at 2746 West 38th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edmund A Lehman there as the householder, a salesman at Vancouver Second Hand Store, with Margaret Lehman, a stenographer at Fleishman & MacLean. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Lehman at 2486 West 5th Avenue, a nurse at the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Today

561 East Hastings and 2746 West 38th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2760 Graveley (1961), 989 Hornby (1975), 153 West 12th (1982) and 2486 West 5th (1994) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 155 West 12th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
